Exploitation and Empty Promises

An excellent report by Friends of the Earth detailing the process in which Singapore-based Wilmar International ignored their own corporate social responsibility policy "No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation" and bypassed their obligation to gain free, prior and informed consent from the communities living on the land Wilmar International had decided to make into palm oil plantations. It's a long, sordid story, and it bears reading, because it's a case study of the many pitfalls on the road to investment in impoverished communities.
